Grandma blitzing it as runner in her 60s
SHE’S the Gold Coast grandmother shocking herself with record-breaking athletics exploits.
What started with a fun run has since delivered Carol Davis enough titles to fill any trophy cabinet – and the 66-year-old has more in her sights.
The Mudgeeraba grandmother-of-four only began running three years ago after heeding the advice of friends to have a crack at a 5km fun run.
After setting an age record in the 60-64 category that day, Davis unearthed the love that had been shelved for decades.
What she has achieved since is remarkable.
The fun run blitz spawned a Gold Coast athletics masters membership, ultimately producing a string of records at state, national and world level.
“I never thought I’d be 66 and doing the stuff I’m doing,” she said. “At my age I thought it was a good thing to do (to take up athletics).
“I played all sorts of sports from an early age and I used to love running in PE at school and have never stopped loving it.
“But I forgot all about it and I went into that (fun run) and discovered I loved it.”
Now training three days a week under the watch of longserving athletics guru Wayne Cousins, Davis has set her aim on the pentathlon at the Gold Coast Masters meet at Griffith Uni next month. Read more about Carol at goldcoastbulletin.com.au
