‘I’d come back – put them back on the map’ ... for $20,000 Capper Maid as hell

LAY off me and my Meter Maids, says the most famous Meter Maid of all time.

Yes, that’s right, Warwick Capper.

The iconic Meter Maids’ very colourful 52-year history in Surfers Paradise involved a 2007 two-week cameo from the larrikin former AFL star in tight golden shorts.

Told debate had been raging on the Gold Coast this week about the appropriateness of the meter-feeding, bikini-wearing Meter Maids in 2017, Capper – the first “Meter Male” – was outraged.

“I can’t believe it – they are all jealous. That’s what the old fat girls say because they can’t fit in their size eight clothes any more, they ate too many hamburgers.

“Bad luck for them, go on a diet – don’t bag the beautiful people like me and my Meter Maids.”

The Bulletin revealed Meter Maids owner Roberta Aitchison is toying with reintroducing Meter Males to even up the gender balance and Melbourne-based Capper said he would happily do it again – for $20,000.

“I met the owner Roberta and managed to convince her at the time she needed me as the first Male Meter Maid.

“I think it’s a good idea for the Gold Coast, it’s fantastic. It’s about equal opportunity.

“I’d come back and do a four-week stint if they could afford me – put them back on the map, get them in New Idea, change it up a bit,” Capper said. “I’ve got my new sun tan, new teeth, my new porcelain veneers and I have size eight footy shorts.”

Capper said during his stint 10 years ago the female Maids were jealous because “I was getting all the photos”.

“I somehow managed to fit myself into some tiny golden shorts which I borrowed off my previous girlfriend – Kylie Minogue.

“I had the long hair, I was like the Naked Cowboy from New York of Australia, the Fabio of the Gold Coast. I was the Meter Man.”

Ms Aitchison is planning Meter Males in the lead-up to Schoolies in Surfers later this month and points out Capper’s cameo was one of many standout moments in Meter Maids history.

As for his $20,000 asking price, she may have rolled her eyes at the suggestion.

She caused controversy herself in the early 1990s when – as a Meter Maid at the time – she posed almost nude for Penthouse magazine.

“I don’t regret that,” she told the Bulletin this week. “At the time it was what brought the Meter Maids back and gave it some international recognition.”

Former Gold Coast afternoon drive show radio queen Bianca Dye, now Brisbane’s 97.3FM breakfast co-host, said she did a stint as a wannabe Meter Maid when just 16 as the then-4GG station promo girl.

“I would go around with the Meter Maids but I wasn’t putting any coins in meters. And the bikinis were deemed inappropriate because they were tiny.”

She has no problem with Meter Maids continuing today and is an even bigger fan of Meter Males: “Equal pay, equal perve, I say.”
