LIFE OFF THE COURSE

-

Q

As an ex-pro who has eased into life after the circuits, what are your business interests?

A

I bought a couple of taxi licences when they were about $550,000 each but it’s a little tough at the moment.

Q

How much do you think the decision by the government to allow Uber into the market hurt you?

A

I’ve still got the licences. You can’t sell them. When you had a government-backed investment you’d think it was very secure.

Q

Sorry to hear that, but are there any other business interests you’re tied up in?

A

Jonesy (fellow retired professional Brian Jones) and I are running some corporate pro-ams.

Q

You had a pretty good time as a stakeholder in the old Wizard Home Loans, didn’t you?

A

I had a good business partner in Steve Robson and we had a few agencies around the Gold Coast. Steve was the only reason it was successful. He knew what he was doing and I stayed right out of it. I’m a hopeless business person. Wizard became Aussie Home Loans.

Q

You had a reasonable home at Ashmore for years. What made you sell it?

A

I downsized. It was a lot of work and it was a huge house. I had my own bar with XXXX on tap.

Q

Back to golf and when did you first venture overseas to play professionally?

A

I played Europe for two years and hated it. I always wanted to go to America. In 1981 I went to tour school over there and I three-putted three of the last six greens to miss my card by a shot, which turned out to be the best thing that could have happened because I wasn’t ready for it in 1981.
