RELUCTANT BEACHIE

-

Q

Where did it all begin for Cheyne Horan as a kid growing up in Sydney?

A

I grew up in Petersham and I started skateboarding when I was five years old. I started swimming there and as a kid I used to win all my races.

Q

We’re told initially you did not exactly like the idea of moving to Bondi. Is that true?

A

When Mum decided to move I didn’t want to leave my friends, I didn’t want to go. But I guess I was destined to be at the beach and be a surfer. I love water, I love being in it. I’ve been off the pro tour something like 25 years now and I’m at the beach nearly every day.

Q

Is it true that your dad Peter was once selected to go to the Olympic Games?

A

Yes, he was a speed skater and was going to the Winter Olympics but he couldn’t afford it and so pulled out.

Q

You hold a rare honour and one that is unlikely to ever be repeated. What is it?

A

In 1976 I won the Australian surfing title at Greenmount and Duranbah and also the Australian skateboard championship. I’m the only one in the world to have won national titles for surfing and skateboarding in the same year.

Q

With the Burleigh Pro on at Burleigh this weekend how do you rate the venue?

A

Kirra and Burleigh are my two favourite breaks. I won the Stubbies at Burleigh and one of my best runs was when I won in Sydney, then the Stubbies straight after it, and I also won the US Open in California.
