WAVES ON THE WAY

Action to heat up at Burleigh Pro as swells set to arrive

CALLUM Robson has continued to build on a strong start to 2018, progressing through to Round 3 of the Burleigh Pro after battling through small conditions.

The Evans Head surfer produced a two-wave total of 12.50 courtesy of an 8.00 and 4.50 to beat Alister Reginato (11.75), Miyu Furukawa (6.55) and Gold Coast’s Toby Mossop (6.20) yesterday.

Robson capitalised on his first wave but conceded he never felt comfortable until the final siren as he chased a second score in his Burleigh Pro debut.

“It was pretty tough out there but there were two good waves and Alister and I both got them,” Robson said. “It was a bit scrappy between that. They are all good surfers so you had to be lucky.”

The conditions had improved slightly on the previous day but the 17-year-old said it was still tough as he looked towards a weekend that could bring added swell.

“It’s the best wave when it is good,” Robson said.

“Hopefully later in the event we get to see how good it is because it’s an event I have always wanted to do.”

The Burleigh Pro is Robson’s second event of the year and comes a fortnight after he made it to the semi-finals of the Hydralyte Sports Pro Junior Bells Beach.

“Hopefully I can do as well as that, if not better, in the next few events,” Robson said.

Robson said his goal for 2018 was to reach the world junior championships while continuing to improve upon his ranking in the Qualifying Series.
