Wellness law forum next week
BOND University is hosting a national forum on the importance of wellness for those studying and practising law.
It follows research showing symptoms of psychological distress in solicitors begins early in their studies and carries throughout their professional lives.
The 2018 National Wellness for Law Forum will be held next Thursday and Friday at Bond University.
National leaders from the legal profession will examine and identifyways in which law can be created, administered, practised and taught with an emphasis on resilience, support and wellbeing.
Bond University Professor of Law, Dr Rachael Field, said the main objective was to encourage recognition of the importance of wellness at both law school and the workplace.
She said this is an issue Bond is tackling head-on as the home of The Wellness Network for Law.
“This is an ongoing and important concern, we really have to be making practical changes to support students and lawyers for the sustainability of the profession into the future,” she said.
Dr Field said research over the last decade has established the high level of psychological distress among law students and practising solicitors.
She said many students found the transition to law school difficult.“Getting across the threshold of the first year of law school is a super stressful time,” she said.
