Ringing the changes
Couples say ‘I do’ to new-age weddings
MOUNTAINS of tulle, towering cakes coated with cardboard icing, assigned seating and a wedding singer crooning on top of a backing track.
The traditional dream day sounds more like a nightmare now.
Times are changing, and new-age wedding expo The Social Engagement, held at Burleigh Brewing Co next Saturday, is proof.
“I definitely think the traditional wedding is on its way out,” event co-ordinator Cathleen Shipp said.
“Now that people are stepping outside the bounds of tradition they can use their wedding as more of an expression of personality.
“Parents aren’t often paying for the wedding, either, so couples are not only careful about how they spend their money, but also they feel less pressure to do what their parents want to do.”
The Social Engagement will showcase how couples
can get creative, from the cake to the dress, to the florals, photographer and venue.
“Cakes now are more like sculptures, they’re incredible,” Mrs Shipp said.
“The photography is less posed family portraits. Brides are looking for dresses they can alter and wear again.
“And couples are feeling less pressure to hire a ballroom or a specific venue.
“I think guys are having more of a say on the big day so it’s definitely a combination of them both.”
