Lions aim high as Bulldogs hit record

- RIKKI-LEE ARNOLD

LIONS gun Jess Wuetschner has warned that the AFLW competition leaders will only get better from here, after finding their groove against Carlton at Princes Park last round.

Brisbane will reach the halfway point of their short season today when they host Fremantle at their Brendale ground. The clash with the fifth-placed Dockers follows Saturday night’s 6.4 (40) to 2.6 (18) victory over the Blues.

For Wuetschner the win wasn’t just significant because it pushed the Lions to the top of the AFLW ladder and helped their percentage, but because they finally started playing the way they wanted to.

“Against the Bulldogs (in Round 2) you could tell we were quite sluggish and slow and not controlling the ball when we had it,” she said.

“We were excited (against Carlton) because we played the sort of footy we want to play. We set the standard last weekend and we need to start growing from that and not take a backwards step.”

The Lions will also look to escape the logjam at the top of the AFLW ladder, which sees five teams all sitting on eight points, including Brisbane and Fremantle.

Wuetschner has been in stunning form this season and is the club’s leading goalscorer with five.

That is the same amount of goals she kicked last season but Wuetschner said she had improved after focusing more on her fitness and strength.

Meanwhile last night, seven-goal hero Brooke Lochland propelled the Bulldogs to a 73-point demolition of Carlton at Whitten Oval.

Lochland unleashed a four-goal blitz in last night’s second quarter and added another three after halftime in the 12.14 (86) to 2.1 (13) win in front of 8987 fans.

The Dogs kicked the highest score in AFLW history.
