Golden couple chase special double

- EMMA GREENWOOD @EmmaGreenwood12

THEY’RE the new couple of the beach.

And Matt Bevilacqua, 25, and Brielle Cooper, 18, could be surf sports’ newest pin-ups by the end of tomorrow, with both on the cusp of a maiden NutriGrain series title.

Winning the title would be the culmination of a dream for either of the Kurrawa pair.

“It would be (special). This is only the beginning of Brielle’s career, it’s very early on but it would be pretty amazing if we both won and I’ve never heard of it being done before,” Bevilacqua said. golden

“But it’s a pretty big job for us both to come on Sunday.

“It’s hard enough to win one (title let alone two). “We’re both in the box seat, true, but it’s harder to win one.”

While they could be expected to be burdened by pressure heading into tomorrow’s eliminator round at North Cronul- la, both have an easy-going attitude Bevilacqua says is the key to their success.

“I think we’re both very similar people in that we just enjoy what we’re doing a lot,” he said. “It’s just another opportunity to race and it’s as simple as that.

“We’ve spoken about it and the nerves aren’t there.

“It’s not as if we talk about Sunday all day – we talk about everything else and then maybe we might touch on it if we see something on Instagram, but that’s about it.

“And I think that’s why we’ve gone so well this season, we’re enjoying what we’re doing.”

The Kurrawa pair will be pitched into battles against former Nutri-Grain champions Harriet Brown and Ali Day as they fight for the title, with both taking on athletes they admire.

“I do look up to Harriet, she’s such a great athlete and has won so many different races and I’d love to be like her one day,” Cooper said of Brown, the defending champ.

Bevilacqua and Day, 27, have been mates since the former moved from Tasmania to the Sunshine Coast to chase his ironman dream several years ago.

“It’s cool to fight out a title with a mate,” Bevilacqua said.
