WE’LL METER AGAIN AT REUNION
ICONIC Meter Maids from the 1970s and 80s are putting the call out for any original Meter Maid ladies to join them for a massive reunion to celebrate the 53rd anniversary of parading the glitter strip.
One-time Southport Meter Maid Katrina Krueger along with iconic meter maid Veronica Cherry and Aquamaid Thea Williams are hoping to get in contact with more than 50 of the original Meter Maids and Aquamaids water skiers.
Ms Krueger said while there was plenty of documented history on the male icons who were credited for the growth of Surfers Paradise like identities such as Keith Williams, Sir Bruce Small and Meter Maids service founder Bernie Elsie, there was hardly any information on the bikini-clad ladies themselves who put the Gold Coast on the map.
“We’re like the ultimate sisterhood,” she said.
“It’s hard to find all the girls as over the years they’ve moved, got married and changed their names, and we’ve lost a few as many of us are in our 70s now.
“We just want to put the call out to any of the ladies who might be still around the Coast to get in touch and come and have some bubbles and celebrate with us.”
Ms Krueger organised an “iconic Meter Maids’’ reunion in November 2016 that was attended by 15 of the more than 50 women who served as the city’s original ambassadors.
The women, now aged from their 40s to 70s, travelled from as far as Townsville, Mackay, Bowen and the Sunshine Coast to swap stories, memorabilia and photos at the event.
The “Iconics’’ will hold another reunion on the Coast in April, with a date and venue yet to be decided.
