MATCHING THE BIG BOYS
Q
It’s no secret Tweed lack the resources of, say, Redcliffe. How do you compete with the powerhouses?
A
You’re exactly right. We are under-resourced compared to the larger teams so for me it’s about doing things a little bit differently. We have got a relationship with the Gold Coast Titans. That, from my perspective, needs to be strengthened. We need to make sure that we are their feeder team and service that relationship. So that means aligning our programs to those guys at 18s and 20s and Cup level to ensure that pathway program matches what the Titans are looking for. The benefit for us to do that is that we are seen as a genuine pathway to the NRL. If we can develop those strong structures so that kids in our catchment area can see coming to play at Tweed means that you are on the right path to play NRL. That’s what it’s about for us. We want to facilitate those dreams. We want to be the pathway and the conduit to the NRL.
Q
That ties in nicely with the development focus Garth Brennan has been pushing at the Titans?
A
Yeah and again it’s no secret that the Titans have lost a lot of kids in the past but with new ownership and new structures comes an opportunity.
Garth Brennan is from Newcastle and I know Garth and he is from the same development system as I am. Tweed is the perfect place for that to happen.
