RADIO and television identity Luke Bradnam is preparing for his 19th marathon.

First the local dad must recover from a knee operation, but it doesn’t faze the running veteran.

“This July will be my 10th Gold Coast Marathon, but all up I have run 19,” he said.

“I have just had knee surgery, but I will be right by then and after the marathon I am going to Everest Base Camp with my daughter.

“I never thought I would be the type to run a marathon, but once you complete one, you start thinking about what else you can achieve.

“They have just welcomed me into the ‘Legends Club’ for running my 10th, the amount of support offered to runners is great.”

Bradnam said the most meaningful Gold Coast Marathon he ran was with his brother.

“He had been through some tough times, so to cross the line together was a great feeling,” he said.

“My advice for anyone starting out is to train ... it’s much easier when you train ... but above all, just keep going.

“If you take quitting off the table ... don’t let it be an option, and just keep putting one foot in front of the other, you’ll make it.”

Bradnam said he had seen the Gold Coast Marathon evolve over the past decade.

“It’s always been big, but each year it grows bigger and bigger ... the best change I have noticed is the moral support,” he said.

“People used to cheer their loved ones, but now everyone cheers everyone ... you’re out there and you feel like the whole crowd is behind you – it makes a big difference.”

Bradnam said he would run the marathon alone this year.

“I am just going to get out there and give it a good slog,” he said.
