Downfalls to march on

No let-up as wet month gets wetter

THE Gold Coast has already experienced 25 per cent above average rainfall for March with more rain and thunderstorms on the cards before the end of the month.

So far, the Coast has copped 160.6mm of rain across 14 wet days, well above the average 129.1mm for the month.

Even the dryer inland areas around Beaudesert received a larger than normal lashing with 40 per cent more rain (56.8mm), far above the average of 40mm.

A Weatherzone spokesman said showers would continue today, clearing off by tomorrow afternoon.

He said locals could expect another 5-15mm of rain with a possible thunderstorm on Tuesday which could potentially bring a “heavy downpour”.

“There is potential for heavy rain (on Tuesday), not too severe, but that could always change,” he said. “It’s definitely been a wetter than average March.”

The recent rainy weather has put a dampener on the Nerang Bulls Rugby Union tournament which was supposed to take place over the weekend.

Almost 400 players from 32 teams were due to play today but the Nerang Bulls committee had to make the tough decision to postpone the event until April 21 as recent rain had flooded the fields, driveway and carpark.

The club’s junior president Dion Lemming said the fields on Pappas Way were often inundated, even after small downpours. “The grounds are so flooded, we had to cancel our AGM because we couldn’t get in the driveway,” he said.

“We’ve had blokes stay in the club overnight in the past because they get flooded in within half an hour and can’t get their cars out.”

As for what weather we can expect during the Commonwealth Games, a Weatherzone spokesman said it was too early to tell.

“It’s outside our range of models for anything definitive yet,” he said.

“It’s looking like fairly average weather but all we would need is a low to form off the Coast and we could get a drenching.”
