Take a dip in the clouds

- JESSICA BROWN

TAKING a dip beneath the Gold Coast skyline at night offers a spectacular light show, but have you ever dreamt of swimming above it?

Perched on the top floor of Paradise Waters’ Grand Mariner, this heavenly pool has panoramic views of Surfers Paradise that stretch as far as the ocean and Hinterland. It is the standout feature of the two-storey penthouse at 12 Commodore Dr, which has hit the market for the first time in almost 20 years.

Owners John and Liz Parker would often indulge in evening swims to admire the skyline from above. “I often used to swim up with a glass of champagne and watch the sunset,” Mr Parker said.

The couple have renovated the apartment since buying it in 2000, transforming it into a contemporary palace.

That included breathing new life into the pool room, which also has its own balcony and kitchenette.

Mr Parker said it was his idea to paint the clouds around the dreamy pool, but they called in artist Mike Perry to make sure it looked the part.

“We wanted something a little bit special, we thought the space was deserving of something unique,” Mr Parker said.

“Now it looks like you’re in the clouds.”

Perry also painted various murals inside the apartment, including that of a grand banquet and rolling hills, giving the home a unique character.

However, the Parkers said the views were its selling point.

“What we loved about it were the views – we’ve got about 270 degree views,” Mr Parker said.

“We’re right on the start finish line of the Gold Coast 600 there too.

“It’s something special that I don’t think we’ll ever replace.”

It is on the market with Winson Woo, of Ray White Sovereign Islands, for $3.65 million.
