She’s coming up Roses

- RAY THOMAS ROSEHILL

TRAINER Tony McEvoy cites the step up in distance and the removal of blinkers as the reasons he expects Bring Me Roses to prove competitive in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill today.

Bring Me Roses ran only 11th in the Coolmore Classic last start but McEvoy said his filly’s effort was a lot better than it read on paper.

“I thought it was a very good run,” McEvoy said. “I wasn’t totally comfortable bringing her back to 1500m but she needed another run before she went to 2000m for this race.

“Her sectionals were very good and she was doing her best work late in the race.

“We have taken the blinkers off and she is up to her right distance range now.”

McEvoy said he learned the lessons from Bring Me Roses’s spring campaign when deciding to take the blinkers off her for today’s race.

“She had won the Edward Manifold (Stakes) and then we ran her with blinkers in the Wakeful Stakes at 2000m and she pulled the whole way,” McEvoy said.

“We took the blinkers off for the (Victoria) Oaks and she ran a blinder to run second (behind Pinot).

“So now she is out in distance, I wasn’t going to make the same mistakes we made in the spring.”

McEvoy’s confidence received a further boost after Bring Me Roses galloped impressively at Warwick Farm midweek.

“When she worked on Wednesday, she was really in the zone and that is telling me she is ready to peak,” he said.’’

McEvoy was bullish about his stable’s chances of securing a feature race double today as he also saddles up Aristocratic Miss in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m).

Aristocratic Miss is still a maiden after six starts but her trainer was convinced she would run well despite a wide gate.
