BEYOND TRIATHLON

Q

How special is it to be the CEO of Triathlon Australia and help steer the direction of the sport?

A

I’m just glad to be involved. I like to think I can help out a bit. We are only custodians of our sport for very small periods of time so the only goal in a role like mine is to leave the sport in as good, if not better, than when you came in. That’s certainly what I’ll be trying to achieve. I never thought I’d be doing the role. It was never really an aspiration to be CEO but when the opportunity came up and I put my hat in the ring I was very fortunate to get it. I have enjoyed being part of a bit of a rebuild in the high-performance area for the kids and I’ve been excited to see how it has all unfolded at the Games.

Q

What else have you been up to since retiring from triathlon? Do you have any hobbies or even business interests that you have explored?

A

I still enjoy riding and swimming, I can’t run much anymore. I have three kids so they take up a fair amount of my time. I was head of leasing for a company called Charter Hall. They were a $21 billion property trust and I was looking after all the income from the shopping centre portfolio (for the retail division). I did that for 10 years with Macquarie Bank and then Charter Hall. I went off in a completely different direction in a corporate type role. It gave me a lot of the experience required to be able to do this role I am in now as CEO for Triathlon Australia. It was nice to put them both together and take on a role where I could use both of those skills.
