PROGRESS AND MATES

-

Q

How much have you seen the sport change and how do you think you would fare as an athlete now?

A

The game has changed. I’d like to think if I had of been training all these years that I would have got better as well. With technological advances and advances in training it’s hard to compare. I raced great athletes, a lot who are now in the Hall of Fame. It’s too hard to compare eras. The kids should be going faster these days. You would like to think the sport has progressed. One thing I was happy about was every year of my career I got faster.

Q

You would have travelled with some characters. What were the personalities like on tour?

A

It was an amazing era because you had so many great personalities like Greg Welch (pictured) and Chris McCormack who were quite funny characters so there was always something going on. There are probably some things we can talk about and others that we can’t. They were a great bunch of blokes we travelled with and we had some fun times on tour.

Q

Is it true you made it into the Guinness Book of Records for the fastest triathlon time?

A

Yeah, that’s right. I’m in the 2000 edition. Not that I think it’s anything special but it’s cool to show the kids. I have no idea what the actual time was. I think it was the winning time from the 1991 world championships (1:48:20).
