Currie favours the new Cyclones strip

CANADA. Western Force. Bond University.

They’re among the coveted jerseys Lachie Currie has pulled on at under-20 level in his budding rugby career, but none quite compare to the one-off Cyclones design he will sport tomorrow.

The Gold Coast open men’s representative team will prepare to face NSW Far North Coast at Palm Beach Currumbin in an Anzac fixture ahead of the South Queensland Championships next month. No stone has been left unturned in plotting the perfect jersey for the big occasion, with the strip designed by Gold Coast artist Lisa Sorbie Martin.

“It represents everybody,” Currie said. “It’s got a red strip to represent poppies for the Anzacs. It has got little mentions for all of the rugby clubs on the Gold Coast, from Tweed all the way up to Helensvale and Beaudesert.

“It has got mentions of the beach and rivers because Lisa was saying that a lot of indigenous people identify others as saltwater or freshwater people. It has got black arm bands to pay respect to Diggers that have served past, present and future.

“I’ve played in some pretty good jerseys but this has got to be one of the best jerseys I have been able to wear.”

It all bodes for a massive occasion to represent his city, having been named on a 13man bench that will be trimmed after today’s Gold Coast District Rugby Union round.

Currie’s selection comes despite him recently changing position from flanker to hooker.

“I have spoken to a few coaches and mentors that I have had and I’ve been told that I have got the correct height to be playing international hooker,” explained the 20-year-old, who through his heritage is eligible to represent Australia, Canada and Scotland.

Currie will line up for Surfers Paradise in their first grade game against PBC today.
