Wallabies defeats hit Horwood hard

MUDGEERABA goalkeeper Mel Horwood is taking things personally.

Having conceded 21 goals in the past two games – and 67 in the Wallabies’ NPL Women’s outings this season – the 28-year-old shotstopper is desperate to stop the rot in tomorrow’s battle with last-placed South West Queensland Thunder.

“It’s definitely something I do feel on my shoulders – it’s hard not to – but the girls do pick me up. It is a very mental position and I’ve got to try to stay strong for the team,” said Horwood, who joined the club 15 years ago.

“Everyone loves to win but there’s no way in the world I’d change anything about my choice to be (goalkeeper) in the team. It’s just continually supporting each other to get us to those wins.

“It sounds weird but it has been god to suffer a few losses because it does drive us to make the changes we need. There’s a few girls that are definitely motivated with the mental side of it.”

Coming off a 14-2 thrashing from Moreton Bay, the 12th-placed Wallabies are at home at 3pm tomorrow when they take on a Thunder side riding high following their first win, a 4-3 triumph over Sunshine Coast.

Horwood said SWQ’s victory had Mudgeeraba on high alert as they fight to snap a four-game losing streak.

“I don’t think there’s any games that we can think (will be easier), they are just as strong competition as us. I definitely don’t want to go into it thinking we’re a chance because we’re overconfident.

“We’ve just got to play our game. The goal for the rest of the season is to implement what we’ve been doing at training.”

Gold Coast United travel to Capalaba at 7pm tonight.

They sit eighth after a 3-0 loss to Souths United.
