SINGER SKYE HITS RARE HEIGHTS

-

LONG before Skye Nicolson hit the national spotlight with Commonwealth Games gold, the Gold Coast boxer had carved out a reputation as Australia’s next singing star.

Nicolson’s father Allan this week told the Bulletin about how the now 22-year-old (pictured) had gained notoriety for her voice — and one particularly memorable moment.

“When Skye was a little girl and used to sing the national anthem before every (local) boxing tournament. She was only four and she was a cute little blonde and everybody loved her,” Allan said.

“She learnt the national anthem at her school, Rivermount College, but they used to sing both verses. Nobody knows the second verse so everybody would stand and wait for the anthem to come (at the tournaments) and then they’d all go and sit down after the first verse.

“One day when we were all there, Skye said ‘please remain standing for verse two’ and she proceeded to sing verse two. It was very funny. It caused a riot at the time, we were all laughing.

“Anybody that was involved in boxing for a long time would know the little girl that sang. She was very good at that. She was always going to be something.”

While she is now targeting success at November’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in Argentina and the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the Yatala boxer’s career path may yet lead her on to the catwalk.

“I think modelling might be her future after her boxing career is over,” Allan said.

“She doesn’t look too badly marked at the moment. She’s had 120-odd fights and I’ve never seen a blood nose.

“She’s at university and she’s just changed her choice of subjects from midwifery and is now doing media and communications. It’s probably hard to be a midwife when you’re overseas all the time.

“She’s dedicated to boxing at the moment — she’s very dedicated at everything she does. That’s what she wants to do and hopefully she’ll go all the way.

“She just loves it and trains hard and they get a lot out of it nowadays. They travel around the world and she’s been to that many countries I couldn’t mention them all.

“She’s represented Australia countless times and it’s a good life for a young person, it keeps her on the straight and narrow.”
