Facing true Aussie test

LEEZA Burdgess came to Australia for the challenge.

Now, here she was, the Seahawks’ superstar recruit facing the common test of any foolhardy import to these shores.

“My teammates were so excited for me to try new things so I’ve already tried Vegemite,” the 27-year-old American said.

“They said I should try it on bread and I guess I thought it would taste like Nutella.” So, another helping? “Um, maybe,” Burdgess laughed.

The iconic Aussie brand might be an acquired taste but Burdgess is quickly adapting to life on our courts.

The in-your-face style of her stint in Romania melded with the QBL like an American takes to Vegemite, yet Burdgess is nothing if not a learner.

The foul trouble that plagued the 193cm centre in last weekend’s opening round will hopefully be a thing of the past when North Gold Coast tonight host their first game of the season against the Capitals (5.30pm women, 7.30pm men).

“I didn’t know much about the QBL but I’d heard great things and knew I wanted to play here,” Burdgess said.

“It’s such a beautiful part of Australia, here on the Gold Coast. And with my team, everyone has been welcoming.

“It’s different (in terms of playing styles) and I’m a physical player so I’ve got to keep my hands off. But hopefully I can develop and adapt.”

You can excuse Miamiborn Burdgess’ love of getting her hands dirty.

Her mother played basketball, but she comes from a family ingrained in American football which “might explain the physical style”.

Regardless, Burdgess has set her sights on being a good team player as the Seahawks strive for respect after their offseason elevation into the state league.

“I don’t set goals in terms of numbers, I just want to be the player my team needs me to be,” she said.

“I just want to keep evolving and hopefully help the team have a good season.

“I’d love to continue playing in Europe but it’s all about learning and playing in better leagues and getting better all the time.”
