Morrisey has one eye on Ipswich for Aqua Vite

TRAINER Scott Morrisey says the Ipswich Cup might await his tenacious gelding Aqua Vite after the five-yearold runs in the rebadged Gold Coast Cup today.

Aqua Vite is Morrisey’s first runner in the Gold Coast Cup, which was formerly known as the Prime Minister’s Cup.

Gold Coast-based Morrisey said Aqua Vite was one of the toughest horses he had trained and it would be a special moment if he could win the Listed race at his home track.

“I’m very happy with his work,” Morrisey said of Aqua Vite, who has drawn gate four.

“He looks beautiful and we have finally had a bit of luck with the barriers.

“He will be very hard to beat because he is so honest. You just need a bit of luck in running and hopefully we can have a bit of that.

“It would be really special to win. You always want to win one of the better races at your home track.

“There are some nice horses in the race and you never want to get too cocky but I’d be rapt to see him run well.”

Morrisey said he took confidence from Aqua Vite’s performance in the Tails Stakes (1600m) at Doomben on April 21, when he finished sixth, just a length behind the winner With a Promise.

“It was a super run,” Morrisey said. “He drew bad and the bias of the track didn’t help him but to get beaten by one length on a track like that was super.”

Morrisey said he would back up Aqua Vite ($7) in a 1600m race at Doomben next week before eyeing a grand final at Ipswich.

“If he does well (today) then we will be trying to get him to the Ipswich Cup (2150m) on June 16,” he said.
