Mental hurdle

A CHANGE in mindset could be the key to unlocking Gold Coast United’s spluttering NPL Women’s campaign.

Fresh off a week’s break and with Commonwealth Games disruptions behind them, United are desperate to build consistency in their push for a top-four finish.

Sitting eighth, they have shown immense promise in narrow defeats to title heavyweights Lions (3-2) and The Gap (4-3) but failed to secure three points against battling sides Mudgeeraba (4-4) and Logan (3-3).

Michael Cook’s side will have the chance to put that record behind them at home to struggling Sunshine Coast at 5pm today, and defender Joy Forsyth believes attitude will make all the difference.

“We need to start every game thinking that they’re all tough teams. Maybe (our problem has been) going in thinking we’re going to win comfortably and then a team comes out roaring,” the 29year-old said.

“Performance wise, we’ve been a bit up and down. We haven’t played as well as we should have, especially against the teams below us.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about this week and now we’re back on track on with our training schedule, we can just knuckle down and better prepare for the games ahead.

“We’re aiming for top four and still aspiring to be in the finals so we’re definitely not giving up.”

Ten points separate United from fourth-placed Moreton Bay heading into Round 13 but the season is yet to reach the halfway mark.

Mudgeeraba, who are second-last with just two wins, take on sixth-placed Brisbane Roar at Sid Bigg Park at 3pm on Sunday.

WE NEED TO START EVERY GAME THINKING THAT THEY’RE ALL TOUGH TEAMS GOLD COAST’S JOY FORSYTH
