Coach still searching for answers following axing

- BRENT O’NEILL

SACKED Coomera Women’s League coach Gareth Welsh remains in the dark over his sudden axing, with player power seemingly forcing the former Logan Lightning mentor out of the club.

Brought to the club in the off-season, Welsh was last weekend handed his marching orders despite steering the Colts to back-to-back wins to start the campaign.

Coomera president Alan McFarlane would not divulge the events that sparked Welsh’s departure, but confirmed his sacking was not based on his side’s on-field performances.

The Bulletin understands Welsh had bluntly questioned his players’ commitment in the days leading up to his axing, after underwhelming turnouts for training sessions.

Then, at his dismissal, he was informed two players had told the committee they could no longer continue with him as coach.

However, his training tirade was never mentioned specifically, leaving Welsh searching for answers.

“It was the right move for the club in terms of keeping the momentum moving forward,” McFarlane said. “We’re lucky to get the girls we have and we will just build on that.”

Vice-president Ray McDonald has taken on the caretaker coaching role, overseeing the Colts’ 4-2 victory away to Nerang on Sunday.

McFarlane said the club was close to appointing Welsh’s full-time replacement.
