Tall order to keep up Cats’ run of success

- TOM BOSWELL

THE Broadbeach Cats have brought in their tallest talents for today’s top of the table clash with the Mt Gravatt Vultures in a bid to keep their unbeaten start to the QAFL season alive.

The Cats have started the year with three straight wins but their 70-point loss to Mt Gravatt during a preseason practice game remains vivid in their minds as they prepare to play the Vultures at Dittmer Park today.

Tall timber Evan Panozza (key defender), James Royes (centre half-back), Luke Dempsey-Che (ruckman) have all been brought in to the team alongside small forward Kai Sheers as coach Brett Andrews tries to negate the success of a towering Vultures team.

“I went to their game last week and they had five or six quality tells,” Andrews said.

“They gave us a touch-up in the practice match and only had two or three tells then so it’s going to be a hard task.

“We are looking pretty good so should be another quality top of the table clash.”

Andrews said a lot had changed from the practice game, warning Mt Gravatt to be wary of an improved team.

“The practice games was about us just trying a few thing,” Andrews said.

“We had a lot of guys that hadn’t played Queensland footy. The side is a fair bit different so I’d like to think we are not going to be in for that shellacking again.

“It is a completely different outfit than the side that got thumped.

“In saying that they were very impressive and we will have to be at our best to beat them.”

Palm Beach Currumbin, who have won their first two games of the season after starting the year with a bye, will play Western Magpies at Salk Oval today while Labrador will look to record their first win against Wilston Grange at Cooke-Murphy Oval today.
