NEW mum Jolene Malkin didn’t expect to be celebrating her first Mother’s Day tomorrow. But twins Pipi and Lulu weren’t going to miss the big day, arriving seven weeks early at the Gold Coast Private Hospital. “We are just thankful they are here and they are healthy,” Ms Malkin said. “They are doing really well.”

BECOMING a mother can be a confronting yet exciting milestone in any woman’s life.

But for these first-time mums, the moment has been made even more special as their bundles of joy arrive just in time to celebrate their first Mother’s Day tomorrow.

Banora Point mum Jolene Malkin and husband Troy welcomed twins Pipi and Lulu into the world three weeks ago at the Gold Coast Private Hospital. The twins were born at just 33 weeks.

Ms Malkin said while she expected her girls to arrive well before the due date, it was still daunting to undergo her scheduled caesarean section so early on in her pregnancy.

“Anything after 32 weeks was going to be a bonus, I knew they would come early because of my size,” she said.

“One of the girls had stopped growing so we knew they needed to be delivered.

“We are just thankful they are here and they are healthy. They are doing really well.”

Mrs Malkin said she would go out and having a nice lunch with her mum tomorrow and spending time cuddling her girls at the hospital.

Southport couple Aleesha Jones and Jaz Lane-Jones, both 24, welcomed baby boy August into the world two days ago after a dramatic birth, falling victim to what Mrs Lane-Jones jokingly described as the “midwife curse”.

Mrs Lane-Jones, a midwife at the Gold Coast Private Hospital, underwent an emergency caesarean after August became stuck and her labour was no longer progressing.

She joked it was typical of a midwife to have a difficult labour. “My midwives made it a lovely experience, even when it didn’t go to plan,” Mrs Lane-Jones said.

She even micromanaged her own labour, monitoring her progress.

“It was hard for her to switch off,” Mrs Jones said.

“The midwives were explaining everything to me so I knew what was going on too.”

The couple, who successfully fell pregnant on their second IVF cycle, said they were looking forward to bringing August home soon but would celebrate the day in hospital with their new son.

Pacific Pines mum Kerry Brammer, 38, was looking forward to introducing her baby girl to three-year-old daughter Madison.

Mrs Brammer and husband Shane welcomed their yet-to-be-named daughter on Thursday afternoon and said Madison was looking forward to her role as big sister.

“She can’t wait to play and cuddle her,” she said.

“She will come for a visit (on Mother’s Day) and we will have a high tea, lots of cuddles and watch some TV. It will be really special with both girls and our little family.”

Mums at the Gold Coast Private hospital will be treated to a decadent high tea and a taste of the hospital’s revamped seasonal menu on Mother’s Day.

General manager David Harper said Gold Coast Private Maternity aimed to give all mums the “royal treatment” during their stay.

“We want our mums and their partners to be treated as guests, ensuring this Sunday is a Mother’s Day they’ll never forget,” he said.
