Icing on a Sizzling cake

- MARK OBERHARDT JJ ATKINS

TOBY EDMONDS’ BIG WINS GOLD Coast trainer Toby Edmonds will put the icing on his best season to date if Sizzling Ace wins the Group 1 JJ Atkins Plate at Doomben today.

Edmonds recently brought up 50 metropolitan winners for the season and is a clear second to Tony Gollan on the Brisbane premiership.

He is poised to break 100 winners on all tracks this sea- son and is also looking for a first Group 1 win today.

Sizzling Ace will be attempting to become only the third maiden to win the Atkins (1600m) for two-year-olds after Freemason in 1999 and Linky Dink in 2009.

But Edmonds thinks there is a strong case for the filly, who deadheated for third behind Lean Mean Machine and Zousain in the Group 2 BRC Sires Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben last start.

“I think most agree she should have run at least second because she didn’t have much luck at the top of the straight,” he said.

“We have been waiting to get her out to 1600m and she has drawn the rails so she should race close like she did in the Sires.”

Sizzling Ace is by the firstseason sire Sizzling, who won the Atkins in 2012.

Sydney jockey Glyn Schofield has retained the ride and believes the 1600m will suit Sizzling Ace, who is rated a $14 chance by Ladbrokes.

Stewards left the track rating in the heavy range for Doomben in the lead-up to the Stradbroke day meeting.

Chief steward Allan Reardon and track manager Jim Roberts walked Doomben yesterday afternoon.

“We have left it as a heavy-8 rating. We really haven’t had drying conditions,” he said.

Meanwhile, Edmonds has kept his smart sprinters Tyzone and Plucky Girl for Ipswich Cup day on Saturday week.

“At this stage Tyzone will run in the (Listed) Eye Liner Stakes and Plucky Girl in the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic,” he said.

Granny Red Shoes, who picked up black-type for her win in the Oxlade Stakes at Caloundra last, is likely to be kept for the Listed MercedesBenz Stakes on June 23.
