Suns ladies primed for epic GWS clash

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

SUNS winter series player Jordan Membrey says the team is just starting to scratch the surface of its ability ahead of a historic home game against GWS tomorrow.

Membrey will run through a guard of honour filled with friends and family at the Southport Sharks home ground at Fankhauser Reserve to play in the club’s second Winter Series game against GWS South.

“It’s such an exciting game to be part of,” Membrey said as the Suns continue to prepare for their inclusion in the AFLW in 2020.

“We train there every week and it’s a ground we all know quite well. To be on the Gold Coast is exciting and to have our family and friends there to support will be great.”

Gold Coast lost to GWS North earlier this month 7.8 (50) to 2.3 (15) in Sydney but Membrey said the lessons learnt and experience gained from the loss had only helped improve the developing Suns team.

“It probably wasn’t the result we were after,” Membrey said. “However we came together through the game and we showed what we could do in the last quarter.

“We want to focus on that and continue that in this game. Travelling as a team to Sydney was a great experience and gave us a chance to bond.

“The program we have is great and we are just starting to scratch the surface. We just need to keep driving our standards and values. That has helped us improve a lot.”

Membrey, a former Brisbane Lions AFLW player, will play largely at halfback again between short stints in the midfield.

Eleven players from the total squad of 29 have come through the Suns Academy, both on the Coast and in North Queensland, which has given captain Beth Pinchin belief the foundation of women’s talent is strong throughout the state.

“We’ve got a fairly young bunch which is great to see that they can possibly keep improving,” Pinchin said.

“I had the privilege of coaching the Sunsets as well as some of the Academy stuff so seeing the talent back then and seeing them develop has been great. They’re already at such a high level at this young age so if they can keep improving, the talent that’s going to be here in the future is going to be fantastic.”

TO BE ON THE GOLD COAST IS EXCITING AND TO HAVE OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THERE TO SUPPORT WILL BE GREAT SUN JORDAN MEMBREY
