Dominant Bears wary of lowly Downs side

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

paper, first-placed Burleigh against last-placed Toowoomba in the SEQ women’s rugby league competition looks like an almighty mismatch, but the Bears have a big-ticket item they are looking to rectify out west this afternoon.

The Bears are unbeaten in seven starts at home this year but have been a little more vulnerable on the road with three wins from six away games.

It’s an area the defending premiers must address starting today at Herb Steinohrt Oval, according to captain Tallisha Harden.

“We’re always really, really wary of Toowoomba. They are a really skilled team and they have probably been unlucky not to win a couple of the closer games that they have been involved in,” the lock forward said.

“They are physical, they are fast and especially being up at Toowoomba it is often hard to get a feel for the game because the home crowd is so into it and they really go hard for their girls.

“We have been lucky to have a few games at home over the last six or seven weeks so to travel away and try to get a win is really important to work towards finals because I think a lot of our finals games will potentially be away if we do find ourselves in that position.

“Our losses this year have come in away games so it is important (to fix).”

Burleigh’s last visit to Toowoomba resulted in a 36-26 win in Round 4. Later this year, Harden will play for her childhood favourite team Brisbane Broncos in the inaugural NRL women’s premiership.
