Vol Vallee’s cred goes on the line

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

VOL Vallee’s metropolitan credentials will go on the line today as trainer David Murphy decides whether or not to take the improving mare to a higher level.

The five-year-old will race in today’s BenchMark 75 Handicap (900m) at the Gold Coast with hoop Alannah Fancourt in the saddle.

Murphy said he was eyeing off a 900m metropolitan race at the Gold Coast in a fortnight and today’s run would determine whether Vol Vallee was ready for the test.

“If she is competitive (today) then we will go to the metropolitan meeting in two weeks’ time,” Murphy said.

“She has drawn well with barrier one and if she does her best and races well then we will push on.”

Vol Vallee has raced in just one metropolitan race from 17 career starts, finishing ninth at Doomben in October last year.

The mare went on finish second and first in her next two starts at the Gold Coast in the most consistent performances of her career.

Two fifth-place finishes followed and Eagle Farmbased Murphy said Vol Vallee was caught out wide on her latest run but was looking primed for another win.

“She is going good and ready to go,” Murphy said.

“She is training well and won a jump-out about 10 days ago. She should just get behind the speed because she

is better just off the pace and hopefully she can have a nice run through.

“Her last run she had no luck and was caught out wide. She likes having a bit of the sting taken out of the track and she has to be ridden off the pace.

“With a strong pace upfront she has a nice sprint at the finish.”

Vol Vallee is going at $15 odds for today’s run but if history is anything to go by, punters may just be cashing in.

The mare won at $16 at the Gold Coast in April in a race Murphy thought she would be favourite for.
