Mayday for Steven as club fires off a warning

-

SUNS CEO Mark Evans has given Steven May an ultimatum: Recommit or risk being sacked as Suns captain. May (left) will be sole captain of Gold Coast for the remainder of the season following the club’s decision to strip Lynch of the title on the back of his decision to seek an exit to join a club in Melbourne. But with May due to become a restricted free agent at the end of 2019, Gold Coast are eager to avoid another season of speculation before potentially losing another skipper.

Suns football manager Jon Haines confirmed the club would look to put offers to both May and midfielder David Swallow before the end of this year and Evans said the leadership status of the current captain could be questioned.

“It’s fair to say when we get to the end of the season we have to have some strong conversations collectively as a group about what we want to achieve at this club, what leadership means in regards to that and whether players are prepared to commit or do they want to hold out the option to have player movement,” Evans said.

“That is not a one day thing. That is something for us to make sure we have progressed by the time we get to the start of next year and we have named our leadership group.”

Evans defended the club’s decision to take the captaincy from Lynch and exclude him from the football program, saying he would be welcomed at their Club Champion awards.
