To Infinity and beyond

- ANDREW POTTS

A TOWER with a floorplan shaped like the infinity symbol is planned for a site near one of the Gold Coast’s most famous beaches.

Developer Bassar Group has filed plans for The Infinity Tower, a 40-storey “skyhome” high-rise in central Broadbeach with just 61 units.

Proposed for a site on the corner of Surf Parade and George Ave, the tower will also have a ground-level shop or food outlet.

Area councillor Paul Taylor welcomed the proposed tower, saying would be a good addition to the area.

“The great thing about Broadbeach is that everyone wants to come here, because it is close to the casino and the convention centre,” he said.

“I expect to see more buildings coming up and pretty high quality ones at that.

“There has been a lot of opposition to high rises in places at the moment but this one is in the right area.”

The development application was submitted to the Gold Coast City Council this week. If approved, it will replace two existing two-storey unit buildings from the 1960s.

It was designed by architectural firm BDA to create an “innovative mixed-use development proposal of exemplary design quality”.

The building is “inspired by the notion of infinity, with the floorplan taking the form of a double infinity symbol”.

Running along the building’s side will be lights that can be programmed to display colours and movements.

The proposed tower would be built just south of the central Broadbeach dining precinct and just north of the area’s state school.

It comes as concern from Mermaid Beach residents at the level of development in the area grows.

Community groups from Mermaid Beach, Nobby Beach and Palm Beach have demanded the City Plan be changed and the council enforce its building height, setback, density, site coverage and carparking guidelines.

Residents also fear the impact of the light rail third stage, which has been tipped to bring high-density development along the Gold Coast Highway.
