THE KING MAKERS HAVE BEEN AT IT AGAIN, NOW ACT KINGLY

Yet another leadership coup barely registered overseas and many of the ‘mob’ hardly noticed, but the Gold Coast was given a big voice in Canberra

- TONY COCHRANE

SO why do people, most people, want to be Prime Minister or Premier?

Easy answer – they all think they could do a better job!

The problem is of course not everyone can be king – or we would be all kings and no peasants?

So, we now have a brand new Prime Minister. A bit like me with cars – always test driving, trying a new model, changing up, moving on etc, etc.

And let’s be honest here, both sides of politics are as bad or as good as each other, so please no false provocation on how hopeless, how disunited this lot are, what a disgrace etc, etc. To quote another king, rock king that is, Jimmy Barnes … “he’s been up and down this road so many times”.

And then of course we have both major parties contemplating the intramural question: “Why is support being eroded from us to minor parties and independents?” Because the mob (us peasants) hate/ detest this internal crap; is the straightforward simple answer!

Like everyone else, let’s see where this takes us. For the sake of the country I hope it is positive. At least, as you will read later in my piece, the GC had a win out of this. But we are all so sick of this crap! Just govern, set a course and give us all some clear direction, please!

How good is John Howard looking right now – a leader who at least got down to work and just governed, gave us a plan to follow and real stability. We might not have agreed on all his policy, but by God at least we knew where and how we were headed! A grown up was in charge. Not really a lot to ask for, is it?

Time to set the record straight on a few pieces of rubbish that we, the mob, were served up last week.

First piece of rubbish – “What does the world think of us now?” Actually, first point who gives a .... ! And secondly, the dollar hardly has changed, nor has the stock market or in other words – the world did not particularly care!

Second piece of rubbish – “We have become like Italy.” Oh please – our politics are so far removed from Italy its not even funny. And secondly, so what if we become like Italy, great option – they make the best food, great vino, fabulous cars and know how to have a good time. Sounds like a plan to me. Only the Greeks do better – they also pay no taxes!

No, the world as we know it did not end; most Australians did not even know it was going on, nor did they particularly care. See it was exciting the first time, back x years ago; then vaguely interesting the second time, then the third time OK; but by this copious number of times ... yawn, please. Democracy – it’s wasted on voters!

The good news though for the Gold Coast was somehow we came out of all these changes and rearranging of the furniture in Canberra (a place no selfrespecting person would want to live in) with serious ministerial representation. Let’s take that.

We have managed to land not one but two Cabinet ministers, I think a first for Australia’s sixth largest city, would you believe? Ministers Steven Ciobo and Karen Andrews and then a minister in the outer ministry in Stuart Robert and an assistant minister in Scott Buchholz. About time – finally the Gold Coast gets a major foot (or would that be feet) into the highest level of government. Long overdue given our status as a growth city.

So, from abject resetting of the Federal Government we actually had a win here in the home town. I like it!

Of course, this would not be an opinion piece without opinion – and let’s face it I have plenty of those.

With all this major influence around the Federal Government from four highly placed homegrown major hitters, let’s get the M1 sorted out.

Now I know the State Government have been hopeless on this front and we get that. However, it’s time to come together and find a common solution gang. We, the mob, need it fixed.

It is the major connection linking the third and sixth largest cities in the country. I can’t possibly imagine a more important piece of infrastructure and the current road is a complete and absolute joke!

We, the mob/peasants, couldn’t care less anymore about what percentage who is paying and from where – we don’t give a shit! Stop prevaricating and start governing (State & Federal) – get this No.1 urban problem of S.E. Queensland fixed.

Or we will really become the Italy of the south!

THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT DID NOT END; MOST AUSTRALIANS DID NOT EVEN KNOW IT WAS GOING ON, NOR DID THEY PARTICULARLY CARE.
