Nightmare crash kills 2

- JACOB MILEY

A GIRL killed in a doublefatality smash on the Bruce Highway near Childers yesterday was en route to a primary school netball carnival.

Two cars collided on the highway at South Isis, near the intersection of Ross Camp Rd, just after 1pm.

An eight-year-old girl, believed to be from the Gold Coast and a passenger in a car travelling north died at the scene, as did a Sunshine Coast man in the other vehicle, a ute, police said.

The girl was travelling with a woman and an 11-year-old girl, who were both flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

Childers Police Officer in Charge Sergeant Geoff Fay confirmed the woman and two girls were on their way to the netball carnival with other cars in convoy.

It has been reported the girl’s parents were in a vehicle travelling in that convoy and saw the tragic accident.

It is believed the girl and her sister were travelling with their grandmother when the headon crash happened.

“It was a number of people travelling together to a netball competition in Bundaberg this weekend,” Sgt Fay said.

The Primary Schools Cup is being held this weekend in Bundaberg.

The crash happened less than an hour from their destination.

Firefighters who attended reportedly said the crash was among the worst they’d seen.

The tragic crash closed the Central Queensland highway for a number for hours.
