Now that’s downsizing

- DEBRA BELA

WHAT do you get when a shed manufacturer downsizes and a furniture maker upsizes? Tiny houses and bush huts.

One bush hut was delivered to Christmas Creek in the Scenic Rim on Wednesday.

The barge to Stradbroke Island has carried two over the bay to create weekend getaways for mainlanders.

Maleny and Montville in the Sunshine Coast hinterland are strong supporters, and 10 have made their way out to Longreach.

“You’re in the city with a big backyard and need a granny flat, or you’ve got a block of land in the middle of anywhere and want a few nights out there, this is where the market is at,’’ Timber Transitions ownermanager Neil Frost said.

Mr Frost started out making bush furniture for the local markets before being approached to make a bush hut.

He set up his business in Darra and has now made 90 huts.

“The Airbnb market is a growth area for people looking for alternate revenue streams. They are putting huts on properties and getting good returns because of the uniqueness of the cabins. That’s really exciting for me,” he said.

Timber Transitions Bush Huts and Titans Tiny Houses are on display as part of the Brisbane Home Show which opened yesterday at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, at South Brisbane.

Titan Enterprises general manager Dallas Simmonds said his company’s move to tiny houses was about diversifying as land sizes decrease and demand for large sheds and garages slows.

“We’ve got a couple who work for us and they live in one on the Gold Coast and they love it and are tiny house crazy,’’ he said.

“I don’t know how they do it. I’d have to have a big shed behind the tiny house to fit all my stuff.”

The Brisbane Home Show is on today and tomorrow at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9am-5pm.
