McEvoy will be happy to finish second to Winx

- RAY THOMAS

KERRIN McEvoy does not like losing but he has become used to trailing behind the mighty mare Winx.

Even at trackwork this week, the champion jockey rode Unforgotten and finished after Winx in their early morning gallop.

McEvoy has ridden with great success all over the world, winning 68 Group 1 races but revealed he has never seen a horse as good as Winx, the $1.12 favourite with Ladbrokes for the $500,000 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick today.

“I’ve ridden Winx in a couple of track gallops and she is the best I’ve ridden in my career,’’ McEvoy said.

“I remember Better Loosen Up as a kid, I heard about Kingston Town, I’ve seen Might and Power, Makybe Diva and Black Caviar but Winx is without doubt the best I’ve seen.

“I’ve chased her home in many races. She doesn’t have any peer that’s for sure.’’

McEvoy will ride the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart ($19) in the George Main Stakes and concedes he is probably racing for second.

“Egg Tart ran very well first-up and showed she has come back in good order,’’ McEvoy said.

“I saw her bouncing off the track the other morning with Sam Weatherley on her and he gave me a nod of approval.”

]Another Waller-trained mare, Unforgotten, is $13 second favourite and is regarded by many experts as racing’s next big thing, but she will struggle against Winx.
