History pushed aside by Cats

- TOM BOSWELL @TomBoswellGCB

BRETT Andrews captained Broadbeach to their last senior premiership in 1996 and 22 years later he will try to guide the Cats into their next grand final.

Broadbeach will play Morningside in the preliminary final of the 2018 QAFL season today in front of a home crowd at Subaru Oval in a game that will decide who will play Palm Beach Currumbin in the grand final next week.

The club has waited more than two decades to see one of its teams play for a flag.

Andrews said he had discussed the history with his playing group but insisted their sole focus was on ensuring they make it past today’s game.

“We are playing at home and we are fit and well,” Andrews said. “You have to bring (the 22-year grand final drought) up but we are ready.

“We can’t look too far ahead. Morningside are a very good unit. They stopped Surfers Paradise last week and we have to be on our game.

“People around the club are very excited but the 22 blokes playing have a job to do.”

Broadbeach won the 1996 grand final over Labrador who went into the game as massive favourites. Labrador had also beaten Broadbeach in a semifinal that year.

It’s a similar story to 2018 with Palm Beach Currumbin dominating the QAFL and beating Broadbeach in a semifinal a fortnight ago.

The Cats have made three changes for the game with vice-captain and forward Josh Searle, halfback Robert Blood and midfielder Brandon Chadwick coming into the side.

The trio will replace Jayden Brennan, Jordan Andrews, Timakoi Bowie who have all been omitted.

“They didn’t do anything wrong but the three coming back are all automatic selections, we have to play them,” Andrews said.

Broadbeach beat Morningside by 47 points in the qualifying final a fortnight ago in a physical encounter.
