GET ON TRACK FOR CUP DAY FASHION

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

THE Melbourne Cup is just 10 days away so the race is on to sort your hat and perfect dress.

But Gold Coast stylist Talia Munro says you have plenty of time to pull together a winning look – and this year’s tips are ruffles, sequins and asymmetrical hemlines, and opulent headwear.

“In terms of colours, I’m excited to see the trends of soft pastel and neutrals come to life,” said Ms Munro, the owner of Element by Talia Munro in the Oracle.

“One of the faux pas to avoid for the race season is to go for a conservative colour such as black, which is meant for Derby Day only.”

For men, Ms Munro recommends bravery.

“I’m encouraging men to play with colour and prints and truly unleash their personality,” she said.

“Men have so much more of an opportunity to express themselves, particularly at Melbourne Cup, where bland and basic colours can see you standing out for all of the wrong reasons. Be bold.”

As for hair, Toni & Guy Broadbeach’s Bernadette Cliff said many were looking to be cutting edge.

“We just had London Fashion Week and designers were working with things being braided into the hair – fabric, ribbons,” she said.

“Hats are really big too. The trend now is leaning more towards them and moving away from fascinators.”

The Melbourne Cup is on November 6.
