THREE houses in a suburban Southport street will become a seven-storey unit block if it is approved by the Gold Coast City Council.

And it won’t be the last, according to the city’s development boss.

Council planning committee chairman Cr Cameron Caldwell said more developments like the one proposed for Ward S were likely in similar locations as the city’s population moves towards 1 million people.

“Southport has become a popular place to live and work with the delivery of major infrastructure such as the Gold Coast University Hospital and the Gold Coast light rail,” Cr Caldwell said.

“This type of in-fill development is likely in the future to reduce our need to erode the green fringes of our city.”

The building is planned for a 1836sq m block near the Southport Fire Station.

According to plans filed with the Gold Coast council, the project will include 99 bedrooms in 40 units, the bulk of which are two and three bedrooms.

There will be 67 parking spaces across two underground basement levels as well as a swimming pool.

A development application has been submitted to the council by Bondi Property Development.

Area councillor Dawn Crichlow said residents could have their say when community consultation opened.

“I will wait to give my thoughts until the planners and residents get in touch,” Cr Crichlow said.

“The people will get to have their say on this project and I look forward to hearing what they think.”

In the past year there has been an increase in the number of unit block developments planned residential sectors Southport area.

The Gold Coast population is expected to hit 1 million people by 2034, which is significantly sooner than earlier modelling that was put forward in the 2015 Future Gold Coast report. for of the the
