Car park for golden site
HOLD the gold. A site earmarked for a giant 66-storey golden supertower is set to have another temporary role before work starts on the highrise apartment block.
But Southport workers will find it just as valuable, at least in the short term, as the site is put to good use as a daytime car park for commuters.
ASF Consortium, through the company Gold Coast Development (No.8), has filed a development application to temporarily transform the 4776sqm site in Scarborough St, near the Southport South light rail station, into a parking area for 129 cars. It will be resurfaced and locked, with a boom gate installed.
Area councillor Dawn Crichlow was cautiously optimistic about the idea but said it was critical not to repeat past mistakes.
“This is only a temporary measure but it is important the site is secure and that the operator does not try and undercut council,” she said.
The site was previously used as a private car park but was closed and fenced off several years ago. No lighting is planned for the site, which is expected to cater for workers in Southport during the day.
ASF is still pursuing its plan for its golden supertower complex, to be called The AU, but has decided to temporarily put the site to use while it continues to refine its plans.
