Officials still chasing field of dreams

FOOTBALL Gold Coast remains committed to establishing a permanent home – including a first-class playing field - at Emerald Lakes, despite shifting to a new Nerang headquarters this month.

Speaking in the latest edition of the Bulletin’s Round Ball Round Up podcast, FGC general manager Damien Bresic said the governing body had “100 per cent” not given up on its grand plan for a home base featuring on and off-field facilities.

“We’ve been working on something for a number of years and those that have been around Football Gold Coast in the last few years have known that (Gold Coast City) Council has gifted a nice parcel of land at Emerald Lakes, near Seachange (Resort),” said Bresic, who oversaw FGC’s office move from Nerang’s Eden Court to Lawrence Drive.

“Unfortunately the last year-and-a-half or two years it’s taken a little bit of a backward step or it’s been put on the backburner just to make sure we get all the ducks in a row and make sure the finan- ces are in place, because we don’t want to spend our members’ money unwisely.

“The big picture is always that we want a home, we want to have facilities where we can host games.”

The need for a FGC facility was highlighted this month when junior teams from Utahbased academy Elite 7 were forced to play games against Gold Coast Knights, Gold Coast United and a Coast Select Team at Kingscliff’s Cudgen Leagues Club.

“It would’ve been great to host somebody like that at the home of Football Gold Coast,” Bresic said.

“We are working on Emerald Lakes and hopefully there’ll be something in the next six to eight months to report on.”
