New faces in Tweed’s first trial of season

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

A NUMBER of fresh faces will be in action at Piggabeen Sports Complex this afternoon as the trial season begins for Tweed Heads.

While Cheyne Whitelaw and Zac Walsh both appear unlikely to be fully fit by Round 1, some other players have grabbed attention on the training paddock.

Dan Palavi, the brother of ex-Warrior and current Seagull John Palavi, will run out in the black-and-white strip.

The club’s fullback position is up in the air, with Runaway Bay premiership winner Jack Mackin scoring first shot at the custodian role.

“He has been very good in pre-season, he hasn’t missed a beat,” said Tweed chief executive Paul Stephenson.

“He looks every bit a Cup player to be honest; I know he was outstanding in the local comp for a long time. We’re fairly excited to see him run.”

Former Dragons under-20 captain Stuart Mason and rugby convert Elijah Nicholas will also be in action.

Nicholas and Dan Palavi will play in the 4pm clash against Souths Logan, with a side closer to full strength kicking off at 5.30pm.

Titans youngsters Ioane Seiuli, Tremaine Spry and Kea Pere will also play the later game.
