VOTE TO EFFECTIVELY OPEN BORDERS GETS BLOOD BOILING

- TONY COCHRANE

QUESTION: How do you know when people are making really stupid decisions?

Answer: They repeat the major errors of the past.

So let’s get a few very basic and relevant points down on this stupid decision led by a few Independents but embraced fully by the Greens and federal Labor in Canberra this week. The cheesy grin photos taken from our Federal Parliament made me want to vomit!

We are a sovereign country. The vast majority of Australians expect and want to both safeguard and protect our borders. No, it is not a free go, allow in whoever etc. That is not what the majority want or need.

Under a previous Labor government they changed legislation and opened up what turned into a monumental disaster with roughly 50,000 refugees (most actually economic refugees who paid for their passage to people smugglers) arriving by boat.

The human misery was extreme. At least 1200 died at sea – probably a lot more, no one really knows. The Labor government at the time then had to panic, opening numerous detention centres for all those men, women and children who had in effect jumped the queues on immigration to Australia.

Australian taxpayers then forked out tens of billions of dollars to cover the cost of this total and complete stuff up on a giant scale. Yes, lives lost, billions spent.

We have only recently, after the Coalition changed this stupid policy back and truly restored our border protection, moved most of the 50,000 plus out of these detention centres, particularly the children, and restored the equilibrium to all this mess. Billions having been spent – again your money.

Bottom line – the current (before this week) system worked. Morrison, Dutton etc had solved the border protection issue.

These medivac changes to the legislation passed this week in our Federal Parliament were mainly aimed at getting the remaining 400 or so off Nauru and into Australia where they can then start the legal process to stay. That’s the truth. And it’s all being cleverly hidden by bringing up what doctors believe the needs of these people are.

The medical claim, again from the Independents, Greens, Labor Left et al, is these detainees are not getting proper medical assistance.

Okay, again some very basic facts – on Nauru the Australian Government (you and me) have paid for a significant upgrade to the hospital and for 60 full-time medical personnel to look after these detainees (good word that, I’ll get back to it), and they receive completely free of charge a medical service that many Australian indigenous communities would desperately love to have.

I’m not sure the word detainees is correct either.

Yes, they are detained on the island of Nauru along with the local population, however they are free to move around, go about their lives, seek work, make new friends, have a drink (don’t think they sip lattes). So it’s a good emotive word, “detainees”. Heart stirring stuff. Silly of me to question it in a rational manner.

So what do we, the smart country, do? We start to change the border protection laws again and potentially set in motion the complete disaster and total disregard for human life all over again. Not to mention the billions of taxpayer dollars involved. How stupid is that! Boy we sure have some complete idiots representing us in the Australian Parliament. (In case those mentioned are offended, like most average Australians I am offended you can treat our national security and our hard-earned taxpayer dollars this way, without looking after our own people first).

A few Greens and Independents, safe in their inner-city seats where they know most of these refugees will not turn up and put more pressure on services, manage to get the Federal ALP on side and push through legislation based on a bunch of falsehoods.

Bill is obviously not that smart, safe to assume?

Perhaps I would not even mind that, but how about showing this bleeding-heart stuff to our own people first?

How about the number of Australian country towns that don’t have doctors or how about the appalling medical services available in some of our indigenous communities? These problems are real and in our own back yard. Fix them first.

It is an absolute disgrace that such superior medical services are provided on Nauru when many a country town or an indigenous community goes without.

These are your fellow Australians – why aren’t they taken care of first? Sit around, all hold hands and tell each other sipping your lattes that you are fighting the good humanitarian cause on Nauru. Bollocks!

You’re a national disgrace. Take care of your own Australians first, many in dire circumstances that should simply not be the case in a country with our resources and wealth.

So, the Liberal-National Coalition lost a historic debate with the passing of this legislation this week. I couldn’t care less.

But I sure as hell care about the future fate of more boat people and I sure as hell care about quality medical help for our own regional towns and indigenous communities first – and so should every politician in Canberra. What a disgrace some of you served up to the Australian people this week.

Can we swap and move some of you to Nauru instead? That could work.
