Premiership or bust for driven Bombettes

IT’S premiership or bust for Burleigh in the revised QFAW Division 1 competition.

Despite AFL Queensland announcing sweeping changes to the South East Queensland football competition which are set to benefit Coast sides, the Bombettes have always fancied their championship chances.

“We’ve always been confident heading into this season,” team manager Brianna Heaney said.

“We’re heading into our fifth season and we’ve been growing each year so we were pretty confident before we saw the changes.”

After reaching the preliminary finals last season, Burleigh are primed for a shot at the holy grail and have only five teams standing in their way in the revised QFAW Division 1 competition.

“Winning the premiership is 100 per cent our goal,” Heaney said.

“We’ve got a few founding members who may be entering their last season before giving it up so we’d love to win it. “We’re only one step away.” Along with less driving to Brisbane and beyond, Heaney believes the smaller pool of teams will only strengthen the Bombettes’ premiership hopes.

“It obviously changes the competition up and we’re getting more of an insight into the teams we’re opposing because we’ll play them quite often but we don’t see that as a negative,” she said.

The Bombettes began their pre-season training last month and have already enticed a number of new players. “As soon as the AFLW season kicks off we always see more women come down,” Heaney said.

“We’ve had lots of returning girls as well as girls from netball and soccer cross codes.

“We’re also seeing a few young girls coming through from our youth teams which hasn’t really happened before so it’s exciting.”
