WOMEN HIT ‘EM OUT OF THE PARK

-

THERE’S nothing like proving your doubters wrong and these women from the Surfers Paradise Division 3 baseball have done it in style.

Just a few games into their maiden Gold Coast Baseball Association season, a case of mistaken ability by a rival team primarily loaded with men left Surfers speechless and determined to make their mark on the league.

“One of the other teams tried to come up to us before games and say ‘if we get six across the plate before you get three outs we’ll change innings’, but we were like ‘no, we’re here to play baseball’,” said second basewoman Chloe Ryan. “Our coach was furious and so were we.”

A few months later and Surfers are set to line up in the grand final against Coomera.

After struggling to find wins early in the season, the team clicked in the new year and have dominated since.

“We’ve proven them wrong,” Ryan said. “It’s an amazing feeling. “To be basically an all-girls team when other teams may have one or two female players is pretty cool.”

The 26-year-old, who started playing baseball when she went to university and couldn’t continue softball because there wasn’t a team, said she was immensely proud of what her team had done in their inaugural season.

“I hope in the near future to see women or men in sport treated equally as just players, not to be distinguished differently,” she said.

The first pitch is at 1.30pm at the Robina Braves.

The division one final between Robina and Twin City starts at 8.30am followed by the division two Robina v Surfers showdown at 11am.
