Police probe after body found at ‘suspicious’ scene in tourist hub

GOLD Coast police are probing a “suspicious” death in tourism hub Surfers Paradise after an unidentified body was found last night.

Ambulance officers were alerted to the grim Markwell Ave scene just blocks from the Gold Coast Hwy and Q1 tower about 5.15pm yesterday.

Police would not say who called paramedics to the address but confirmed an unidentified man was found dead at 34 Markwell St. It is understood he had a head injury and died at the scene.

Officers have cordoned off near the area, located directly across the road from the Wyndham Hotel.

Police at the scene (right) would not comment on whether a murder probe was under way but sources told the Bulletin it “looks suspicious”. Detective Acting Inspector Matt Ward said police, who were last night door knocking units on Markwell Ave, were asking anyone with information to come forward.

“We’re asking anyone connected to the address or having knowledge of the circumstances leading to the death of this unidentified person at 34 Markwell Ave,” he said.

He could not confirm whether there had been previous incidents at the address.

“I haven’t gone into too much detail of that yet. The main thing is to try to find out who we’re dealing with first.”

A neighbour said there had been problems in the house for months.

“You never heard such violence, such screaming,” he said. “It’s been a house of horrors for months, I’ve been waiting for something like this.”

Investigations were continuing overnight as forensic teams searched the property.

It is the second violent incident on the street in less than a year. In July, 2018, a woman was stabbed on the footpath.
