Seahawks bounce back to top

- ELIZA REILLY

AFTER making the playoffs last season, the North Gold Coast Seahawks women have wasted no time in their mission to return to the finals with two impressive wins to begin QBL 2019.

The Seahawks have made a nest for themselves at the top of the QBL ladder and with their forwards firing they look like a far more potent outfit this year.

“It’s been a really pleasing start,” said coach Robert Sleaford. “Despite a slow preparation, we’ve hit the floor running.

“We have a lot more inside presence this year like Deja Middleton has been great for us inside along with Jamie-Lee Jones.”

Despite a number of their starters attracting praise, Sleaford was quick to highlight the contribution that his junior players have made to their impressive start.

“When our younger girls like Katie Deeble and Charli Reece come onto the court, we don’t lose anything,” he said.

After missing last week‘s game for the Australian under-16 squad camp, Deeble returns to the lineup for the Seahawks this week.

Despite a Round 4 doubleheader set to follow tonight’s clash against the Brisbane Capitals, Sleaford said there was no temptation to rest players at this stage.

“We have enough break so we won’t look at resting anyone,” he said.

“We had a good solid hit out on Thursday night so we’ll back in our game plan against theirs (Brisbane).

“We’re looking forward to playing at home again in front of our home crowd who the girls love.”

Today’s match starts at 5pm at Runaway Bay Indoor Stadium followed by the men’s showdown at 7pm.
