Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin

Stars align as city puts its sports acumen on display

- KATE JONES, TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT MINISTER

AFTER two weeks of rain, clear skies and brilliant sunshine prevailed as the most powerful decision makers in world sport touched down on the Gold Coast.

To put our best foot forward with the eyes of the world on the Gold Coast this week, we needed the stars to align.

With great weather and the support of thousands of locals, we could not have asked for a better result for SportAccord 2019.

Having staged the best Commonwealth Games of all time only 12 months ago, the Gold Coast boasts millions of dollars’ worth of tourism and transport infrastructure which makes this city one of the foremost events hosts on the planet.

The Palaszczuk Government invests in major events because we know they support tourism jobs.

By attending SportAccord 2018 immediately after the Commonwealth Games, we secured $47 million in major events.

The Logies, Eurovision and SportAccord are just a few of the events we’ve secured for the Coast that entice visitors and support local businesses.

We know that by hosting Australia’s first ever SportAccord this week, we’ve made connections that will deliver an even greater return for our tourism industry.

I’d like to extend thanks to all Gold Coasters who did their bit this week by welcoming thousands of international sporting delegates for a trip that we know they won’t forget in a hurry.

The future is brighter than ever before for the Coast.

I can’t wait to keep working with locals in coming months to capitalise on the connections made at SportAccord this week.
