Sisters are doing it for their street

- ELIZA REILLY

IT’S not unusual to drive down this street in Bundall and see 15 or so children playing in the cul-de-sac.

From homemade perfume stands to bike races and even a permanent basketball hoop, this street is a hub of outdoor activity and play.

But one group from this neighbourhood took it to the next level.

Earlier this year, the Bundall Angels were born when a group of eight girls aged between 7-12 decided to enter a dance competition.

From there, the team of four sets of sisters from four neighbouring houses took the idea and turned it into reality.

“We are all big dancers and we all liked to hang out in our street and make up little parts of dances,” said head choreographer Shayla Ennis.

“We thought we’d make a routine and enter it into a competition for fun.”

With no input from their parents, the girls began rehearsing, ordering costumes and eventually submitted their application into the 2019 Australian Dance Cup held in Surfers Paradise earlier this month.

Ennis, who is 13 and has been dancing for ten years, said that despite some predance nerves, their troupe was ecstatic with their performance of their dance ‘Queen Bee,’ which snared them first place in the under 13 division.

“We walked off stage thinking we’d done well but we said we’d be happy with wherever we placed because we were coming up against professional dance schools,” she said.

“It meant so much to us and we were all so happy.”

Ennis plans to pursue the troupe and compete again in the future.
