Weakened Seagulls to play to their strengths

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

INJURIES to Seagulls frontrowers CJ Sims and Shelley Fox will force a change of tack when they take on Souths in a pivotal match to the tight SEQ women’s rugby league division one ladder.

Tweed, Souths and Easts all hold a share of fourth place on 12 competition points. Both Burleigh and Brothers Ipswich are within two points ahead.

The Seagulls have taken impressive strides forward in their last two outings but Sims’ broken jaw, plus Fox’s troublesome knee, will test their depth in the forwards.

Maddie Shaw has been promoted from the bench to partner Serena Martin starting front-row.

Coach Kelvin Wright confirmed they will deploy a game plan designed to expose the added size in Souths’ squad.

“We’re probably two totally different styles of teams … especially with us losing CJ and Foxy, we’re a bit smaller,” Wright said. in the

“We have made some slight adjustments because obviously we can’t be too combative with the size difference so we’ll just look to use our strengths.

“We have just got to have a lot of movement around the football so we’ve got lots of options, so we will probably make a few more passes than what they do I suppose but we’re comfortable doing that. We practice a lot of catch-pass and a lot of our fundamental skills so I will be challenging the girls to make sure that we utilise it once we go on the field.”

The match will kick off at 3pm today at Piggabeen Sports Complex. Burleigh have the bye.
